Disney buying Star Wars is the best thing since Jar Jar Binks | Blogs ...

Devil?s Advocate is a regular column assuming an alternate viewpoint on a topical subject of the week.

It was the news that Star Wars fans had spent 35 years waiting for: confirmation that the saga would continue and that Episode VII would be released.

But far from greeting the news with excitement, fans across the world took to Twitter to voice their concern. Because although Star Wars will continue, it will unfold under the spreading banner of the ?Disney family?.

Fans feared that that some day we?d see Han Solo on screen in a Mickey Mouse t-shirt. They shuddered at the thought of Luke Skywalker travelling to Earth to save a humped-back whale. They wept at Jar Jar Binks fronting exercise videos ?Gungan style?.

But we say ? bring it on.

Who better to continue the story of the evil Galactic Empire than another sinister empire, the most successful media conglomerate in the history of corporate America?

They are, after all, master storytellers. Who better to entertain our children and grandchildren than the studio that brought us Education for Death: The Story of One of ?Hitler?s Children??

That Walt Disney produced an anti-Nazi film while being dogged by rumours of anti-Semitism just proves the kind of lateral thinking and business prowess that Star Wars needs to survive into the future.

For these are the foundations that the Disney Family, now including Pixar and Marvel, is built on.

Theme parks, merchandising and endless sequels have ensured that it is a family that will stop at nothing to get the most bang from your buck. Their decision to price DVD and Blu-Ray discs far higher than the competition is yet another triumph of involving their audiences in their growth strategy.

So why complain that Disney has bought the Star Wars franchise? Yes, they?ll continue their hugs and kisses campaign to "focus on creating and monetizing the world's best branded content, innovative technology and global growth to drive long-term shareholder value", but they?ll give us what we really want: more opportunities to buy Star Wars merchandise.

Because, let?s face it, we have a strange nostalgic notion of Star Wars based vaguely on this disco version of the theme tune, released shortly after the first movie.

We remember enthusiastic teenagers dressed as their favourite characters, bouncing on a flashing dance floor as they celebrate the most exciting motion picture event of all time.

They ate candy, abstained from sex, and celebrated a universe where Americans were good, Brits were bad, and Han shoots first.

Whereas the truth is that Star Wars went downhill almost immediately with the release of 1978?s Star Wars Holiday Special - a one off show where Han and Chewbacca try to get home for a family party, with special guests Jefferson Starship.

Even to the most devoted fans it was a stinking pile of bantha poodoo deposited onto our laps.

And since then it?s just got worse. We?ve been forced to endure sequels, special editions, prequels, re-released 3D versions, cartoon TV series and endless merchandising.

But now it?s over. Finally a company with ?Family Values?, a ?Family Company?, will continue the brand, to return us to that golden disco-age of Star Wars.

They?ll offer us Episodes VII, VIII and IX, and then potentially more spin-offs, tie-ins and further holiday specials, all expanding a universe of infinite creativity: a bottomless wishing well that we can keep throwing money into in the hopes that our Star Wars memories will be restored.

And, at the end of the day, Disney will survive. Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm? the whole ?Disney Family?, all having a big party, and splashing about in Scrooge McDuck?s gold-filled swimming pool.

Top 10 Fitness Trends Picked For 2013 ? CBS Chicago

Oct. 29, 2012 ? Forget fancy fitness fads. Your body is the only equipment you need for one of the hottest fitness trends: body-weight workouts.

A new survey of fitness trends shows body-weight training, including back-to-basics exercises like push-ups, planks, and pull-ups, is expected to be one of the top 10 fitness trends of 2013.

Researchers say people have been using their own body weight for centuries as a form of resistance training. But this is the first time it has made it into the trend survey, because gyms are now packaging it as part of exercise programs.

?Body-weight exercises are a proven way to get and stay fit,? says researcher Walt Thompson, PhD, of Georgia State University. ?In a time when many people are concerned with cutting expenses, body-weight exercises are a great way to feel great and look toned without a big financial investment.?

Top Fitness Trends Predicted for 2013

Taking the top spot in the fitness trend survey for the sixth year in a row are fitness professionals.

Researchers say education and certification programs for health and fitness professionals are experiencing exponential growth. The number of employed fitness trainers is projected to rise by 29% from 251,400 in 2010 to 311,800 in 2020.

According to the survey, the top 10 fitness trends predicted for 2013 are:

1. Educated, certified, and experienced fitness professionals ? Jobs for fitness workers are expected to rise much faster than the average for all other occupations, according to the U.S. Labor Department.

2. Strength training ? In the No. 2 spot for the second year in a row, strength training continues to be a strong trend. No longer restricted to body building, most people now incorporate some form of weight training to improve or maintain muscle strength.

3. Body-weight training ? Body-weight exercises use minimal equipment and include push-ups, pull-ups, planks, and squats.

4. Children and obesity ? Exercise programs aimed at the problem of childhood obesity are also a major fitness trend. Schools are increasingly partnering with commercial and community-based physical activity programs to prevent and treat rising childhood obesity rates.

5. Exercise and weight loss ? Consistently in the top 20 fitness trends, researchers say most popular diet plans incorporate exercise to encourage weight loss.

6. Fitness programs for older adults ? Fitness clubs are capitalizing on an aging baby boomer generation with age-appropriate exercise programs.

7. Personal training ? As more personal trainers are becoming certified, they are becoming more accessible in a variety of settings, such as corporate wellness, community-based, and medical fitness programs.

8. Functional fitness ? Researchers define functional fitness as using strength training to improve balance, coordination, force, power, and endurance to perform activities of daily living. Functional fitness programs are designed to reflect actual activities done as a function of daily living and are often used in fitness programs for older adults.

9. Core training ? Using equipment like balance balls and wobble boards, core training stresses strength and conditioning of the stabilizing muscles of the mid-section. Researchers say exercising the core muscles in the hips, lower back, and abdomen improves overall stability for daily activities and sports performance.

10. Group personal training ? A boon for budget-conscious clients, personal trainers now often provide services to small groups of two to four people at deep discounts.

The survey was completed by 3,346 health and fitness professionals worldwide and appears in the American College of Sports Medicine?s Health & Fitness Journal.

The truth about America's biggest criminals - Page 1 - News ...

You wouldn't know it by watching the news or reading the paper, but America's banks are on the largest crime spree the country has ever known. Let's go to the highlight reel, shall we?

In July, Wells Fargo paid a $175 million settlement after the feds caught its brokers systematically pushing minority customers into mortgages with higher rates and fees, even though they posed the same credit risks as whites.

Longtime prosecutor and Notre Dame law professor G. Robert Blakey: "The real theft was on Wall Street... All of the people who ran the scams have their big houses and their airplanes and they're laughing."

"Retired criminal" Sam Antar, who now trains the IRS and FBI how to bust corporate looters: "It's almost like stealing a billion dollars with a pencil is not as bad. You have a lesser chance of going to jail than if you mug somebody on the streets of New York."

One study found that Wells Fargo charged Hispanics $2,000 more in what the Justice Department called a "racial surtax." The bank docked blacks nearly $3,000 extra for their own improper pigmentation.

But despite a colossal civil-rights fraud perpetrated against 30,000 customers, the settlement amounted to just .008 percent of the San Francisco bank's annual income. It was like forcing a $30,000-a-year working stiff to pay a $240 fine.

Across the country, in Minneapolis, U.S. Bank also swindled its customers, though at least it let whites in on the action. Instead of logging debit-card purchases in the order they were made, the bank rearranged them from highest amount to lowest, the better to artificially stick customers with overdraft fees.

U.S. Bank paid $55 million to settle a class-action suit in July. It was the thirteenth major bank caught running this scam.

Yet these titans of finance were pikers compared to American Express. It promised $300 to anyone who signed up for its Blue Sky card, then decided it would be way better to just stiff them. The company was also caught charging illegal late fees and discriminating against older applicants. The penalty for its sins: $112 million in fines and refunds.

These were just the opening salvos of the assault. Bank of America was caught illegally foreclosing on the homes of active-duty soldiers. Visa and MasterCard were charged with fixing the prices they charged merchants to process credit-card payments. Morgan Stanley colluded to drive up New York electricity prices. And in the most depraved case of all, Morgan Stanley was even sued for allegedly swindling Irish nuns in an investment deal.

If they'd been common robbers, the bankers surely would have faced indictments. After all, their scams have run for years, their breadth and coordination breathtaking.

But not a single boss went to jail. Some firms settled for just a fraction of what they'd stolen. Most have never admitted wrongdoing. And in the ethics-optional land known as Wall Street, many saw their stock prices rise.

America's country club set has forged its own replica of the Mafia ? only bigger, broader, and capable of unleashing far more damage on the U.S. economy.

"Unquestionably, that's true," says Notre Dame law professor G. Robert Blakey, whose career prosecuting organized crime runs all the way back to the Kennedy administration. "I was looking at stuff on Mulberry Street, and the real theft was on Wall Street.... All of the people who ran the scams have their big houses and their airplanes, and they're laughing ? they got away with it."

The crime wave is a ready-made campaign issue: Gucci villains plundering the middle class. But you haven't heard a peep out of Barack Obama or Mitt Romney. Both have records they'd prefer you didn't notice.

The situation leaves Sam Antar with a sense of longing. He's a former chief financial officer convicted of securities, mail and wire fraud.

"My biggest mistake in life was that I committed my crimes in the 1980s," he says. "If I committed them today, I wouldn't even get house arrest. I'd just hire a good lawyer and pay a fine and I'd be free."

The Prom Queen Visits Washington

Capitol Hill's approach to organized crime ? at least the yacht-club variety ? was on display in June, when JP Morgan Chase chief executive officer Jamie Dimon was summoned to appear before the Senate Banking Committee.

Four years earlier, American taxpayers shoveled him a $25 billion bailout package. But Dimon had since refashioned himself as the sweetheart of Wall Street, the heroic captain who'd weathered the storm. Obama called him "one of the smartest bankers we've got."

On this day, that compliment appeared based on a very low bar. A Morgan trader known as the "London Whale" had just gambled away a stunning $6 billion by making bad bets on the credit markets. His behavior reflected the same strain of incompetence that detonated the economy in 2008.

The senators had presumably summoned Dimon to extract a pound of flesh. Instead, the exact opposite happened.

They stumbled over themselves with softball questions and blubbering supplication.

Typical of the biting line of inquiry was Tennessee Republican Bob Corker: "You're obviously renowned ? rightfully so, I think ? for being one of the best CEOs in the country," he told Dimon.

So much for protecting the economy.

By the time the hearing was over, Dimon may have needed a post-coital shower.

Conveniently unmentioned at the hearing ? or covered in the press ? was that JP Morgan was in the midst of a criminal bender that would make the Genovese crime family envious.

It began the year before, when Dimon's bank paid a $27 million settlement for systematically screwing 6,000 active-duty soldiers. JP Morgan was caught overcharging on interest rates and illegally foreclosing on the soldiers' homes. (The bank did not respond to interview requests.)

Green Blog: Bloomberg Endorses Obama, Citing Climate Change

In a surprise announcement, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said Thursday that Hurricane Sandy had reshaped his thinking about the presidential campaign and that as a result he was endorsing President Obama.

Mr. Bloomberg, a political independent in his third term leading New York City, has been sharply critical of both Mr. Obama, a Democrat, and Mitt Romney, the president?s Republican rival, saying that both men have failed to candidly confront the problems afflicting the nation. But he said he had decided over the past several days that Mr. Obama was the best candidate to tackle the global climate change that the mayor believes contributed to the violent storm, which took the lives of at least 38 New Yorkers and caused billions of dollars in damage.

?The devastation that Hurricane Sandy brought to New York City and much of the Northeast ? in lost lives, lost homes and lost business ? brought the stakes of next Tuesday?s presidential election into sharp relief,? Mr. Bloomberg wrote in an editorial for Bloomberg View.

?Our climate is changing,? he wrote. ?And while the increase in extreme weather we have experienced in New York City and around the world may or may not be the result of it, the risk that it may be ? given the devastation it is wreaking ? should be enough to compel all elected leaders to take immediate action.?

Mr. Bloomberg?s announcement is another indication that Hurricane Sandy has influenced the presidential campaign. The storm, and the destruction it left in its wake, has dominated news coverage, transfixing the nation and prompting the candidates to halt their campaigning briefly.

More than that, it appears to have given a new level of urgency to a central issue in the presidential campaign: the appropriate size and role of government.

As the Federal Emergency Management Agency began undertaking relief efforts across the Northeast, Mr. Romney found himself in the tough position of having to clarify a statement he made last year in which he appeared to back giving the states a larger share of the federal government?s role in disaster response.

But Mr. Bloomberg?s endorsement was largely unexpected. For months, the Obama and Romney campaigns have sought the mayor?s endorsement, in large part because they believe he could influence independent voters around the country.

Mr. Bloomberg has steadfastly withheld his support, largely because he had grown frustrated with the tone and substance of the presidential campaign ? recently deriding as ?gibberish? the answers that Mr. Obama and Mr. Romney gave during a debate to a question about an assault weapons ban. He has expressed disappointment with Mr. Obama?s performance over the past few years, and concern about what he has described as Mr. Romney?s shifts in views over time.

In announcing his endorsement, Mr. Bloomberg listed the various steps Mr. Obama had taken over the last four years to confront the issue of climate change, including pushing regulations that seek to curtail emissions from cars and power plants. But the mayor cited other reasons for endorsing Mr. Obama, including the president?s support for abortion rights and for same-sex couples, two high-priority issues for the mayor.

At the same time, Mr. Bloomberg said he might have endorsed Mr. Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, except for the fact that the Republican had abandoned positions he once publicly held.

?In the past he has taken sensible positions on immigration, illegal guns, abortion rights and health care ? but he has reversed course on all of them, and is even running against the very health care model he signed into law in Massachusetts,? the mayor said of Mr. Romney.

Mr. Bloomberg did not endorse a presidential candidate in 2008, when Mr. Obama ran against Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona.

Even in his endorsement, the mayor continued to express criticism of the president. He said that Mr. Obama had fallen short of his 2008 campaign promise to be a problem-solver and consensus builder, noting that he ?devoted little time? to creating a coalition of centrists in Washington who could find common ground on important issues like illegal guns, immigration, tax reform and deficit reduction.

?Rather than uniting the country around a message of shared sacrifice,? Mr. Bloomberg said of Mr. Obama, ?he engaged in partisan attacks and has embraced a divisive populist agenda focused more on redistributing income than creating it.?

In a statement, Mr. Obama said he was ?honored to have Mayor Bloomberg?s endorsement.? The president acknowledged Mr. Bloomberg?s chief concern, saying climate change was ?a threat to our children?s future, and we owe it to them to do something about it.?

?While we may not agree on every issue,? the president added, ?Mayor Bloomberg and I agree on the most important issues of our time.?

And, alluding to the damage from the hurricane, Mr. Obama said: ?He has my continued commitment that this country will stand by New York in its time of need. And New Yorkers have my word that we will recover, we will rebuild, and we will come back stronger.?

The endorsement is the latest effort by Mr. Bloomberg to affect the national political debate as he nears the twilight of his tenure in City Hall.

Last month, the mayor announced that he was creating his own ?super PAC? to support candidates from either party, as well as independents, who he believed are devoted to his brand of nonideological problem solving, and who supported same-sex marriage, tougher gun laws or school reform. A billionaire, Mr. Bloomberg said he would spend from $10 million to $15 million of his money in highly competitive state, local and Congressional races.

Global Strategies: Three questions for Superintendent Carole Smith

Tonight (11/1/12) the Portland Council PTA is holding a ?Conversations with Superintendent Carole Smith? at 6:30 pm (6:00 pm for light snacks) in the Grant High School Library (here). I can?t go because of other commitments, but I do have three categories of questions I hope will be asked of our superintendent.

Smith carolFirst, relating to today?s news that PPS was unable to submit an application for federal funding to develop personalized education plans (here), what would PPS have proposed if the Portland Association of Teachers had not objected? What is your future vision of personalized education in PPS? And what is your vision of the development of online education in PPS?

Second, relating to immersion programs and enrollment balancing in the Jefferson cluster, there are excess classroom capacities and now empty schools in the Jefferson cluster that could be used to expand Mandarin, Japanese and Spanish immersion programs (all of which have had sufficient parental demand for expansion), what keeps PPS from opening such immersion programs in the Jefferson cluster? Is it because PPS thinks low-income and/or African-American students do not need opportunities to learn Mandarin, or Japanese or Spanish?

Third, it need cost no more than PPS currently spends per pupil per year to send a high school student to study abroad for a school year through existing study abroad organizations. PPS could invest in Portland?s global economic future and provide equity in study abroad opportunities for low-income students. What keeps PPS from having such a high school study abroad program?

Super-rare, super-luminous supernovae are likely explosion of universe's earliest stars

ScienceDaily (Nov. 1, 2012) ? The most-distant, super-luminous supernovae found to date have been observed by an international team, including Raymond Carlberg of the University of Toronto's Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics. The stellar explosions would have occurred at a time when the universe was much younger and probably soon after the Big Bang.

"The objects are both unusually bright and unusually slow to fade. These are properties that are consistent with what is known as pair-instability supernova, a rare mechanism for explosion which is expected to happen for high-mass stars with almost no metal content. That is, the very first stars to form," said Carlberg.

The two supernovae, identified as SN2213 and SN1000+2016, were discovered in image data obtained via the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey. In recent years, various surveys have enabled astronomers to open new windows on the universe, including the discovery over the past decade of super-luminous supernovae that are tens to hundreds of times more luminous than regular supernovae. "The Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey stands out as the first really deep survey of the sky, covering large volumes of the universe," said Carlberg, a Canadian leader of the Survey.

All of the processing of the image data was done at U of T using a search technique that first vastly narrows the search to the high redshift star-forming galaxies and then looks for supernovae that are more luminous than normal supernovae and have unusually long fading times -- precisely the characteristics of pair-instability supernovae.

The pair-instability explosion mechanism only occurs in stars that are about 150-300 times more massive than the sun, explains Carlberg. No stars that massive form in the current universe because as stars are assembled they start nuclear burning and push away additional gas. However, in the very early days of the universe, the metal abundance of the gas is essentially zero, making it almost transparent so that it can fall on the forming star.

Such massive stars do not last long. They are so hot in the centre that pressure is lost causing a collapse to start, which then heats up the core even more. Eventually enough oxygen and silicon are created that their fusion causes a nuclear explosion much more luminous than other supernova mechanisms.
