People seek high-calorie foods in tough times

Jan. 22, 2013 ? Bad news about the economy could cause you to pack on the pounds, according to a new study published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

The study shows that when there is a perception of tough times, people tend to seek higher-calorie foods that will keep them satisfied longer. When subconsciously primed with such messages, a "live for today" impulse is triggered causing people to consume nearly 40 percent more food than when compared to a control group primed with neutral words.

"The findings of this study come at a time when our country is slowly recovering from the onslaught of negative presidential campaign ads chalked with topics such as the weak economy, gun violence, war, deep political divides, just to name a few problem areas," said Juliano Laran, an assistant professor of marketing at the University of Miami School of Business Administration, who conducted the research with doctoral student Anthony Salerno. "Now that we know this sort of messaging causes people to seek out more calories out of a survival instinct, it would be wise for those looking to kick off a healthier new year to tune out news for a while."

Further, when the same group primed with "tough times" messages was then told the food they were sampling was low-calorie, they consumed roughly 25 percent less of the food. According to the researchers this is because if people perceive that food resources are scarce, they place a higher value on food with more calories.

Several studies were conducted as part of the research. In the first one, the researchers invited study subjects to join in a taste test for a new kind of M&M. Half the participants were given a bowl of the new candy and were told that the secret ingredient was a new, high-calorie chocolate. The other half of the participants also received a bowl of M&Ms but were told the new chocolate was low-calorie. All of the participants were told that they could sample the product in order to complete a taste test evaluation form.

In reality, there was no difference in the M&Ms that the two groups were given to taste. The researchers were actually measuring how much participants consumed after they were exposed to posters containing either neutral sentences or sentences related to struggle and adversity. Those who were subconsciously primed to think about struggle and adversity ate closer to 70 percent more of the "higher-calorie" candy vs. the "lower-calorie" option, while those primed with neutral words did not significantly differ in the amount of M&M's consumed.

"It is clear from the studies that taste was not what caused the reactions, it was a longing for calories," continued Laran. "These findings could have positive implications for individuals in the health care field, government campaigns on nutrition, and companies promoting wellness. And, certainly beware of savvy food marketers bearing bad news."

PFT: Fan stabbed after NFC Championship Game

LombardiAP

The man known for his ?hello, friends? greeting has a very different message for the enemies of new Browns V.P. of player personnel Mike Lombardi.

Jim Nantz of CBS has launched an assault against those in the Cleveland media who are criticizing the team?s decision to hire Lombardi ? and against those within the league who have been, in Nantz?s view, backstabbing Lombardi.

Nantz made a spirited call on Friday to the local CBS Radio affiliate, and he followed it with a 17-minute interview by Marla Ridenour of the Akron Beacon Journal, during which Nantz admitted to possibly sounding ?over the top? because he was walking briskly in the cold.? Nantz called the media opponents of Lombardi ?smarmy? and accused them of ?personal vendettas,? apparently pinning most of the blame on Tony Grossi of ESPNCleveland.com.

?Maybe I was speaking in broader terms, really, about just the overall climate in Cleveland. I?m not into attacking anybody in the media, ever, because I live in the same world,? Nantz said. ?But I do think it has gone beyond the overall coverage . . . who are all these people who think they know more about football than Mike Lombardi??

To his credit, Nantz at all times acknowledged a friendship with Lombardi.? Still, the zeal with which Nantz defended Lombardi more than counters the potency of the attacks.? At one point during the radio interview, for example, Nantz declared that Lombardi and Patriots coach Bill Belichick are the two smartest football people in the business.

We agree wholeheartedly with Nantz on one point.? Backstabbing is as common in the NFL as run-blocking.? Plenty of folks in the business will smile to your face, and then badmouth you as soon as you?re out of earshot.? While that?s a dynamic that infects plenty of industries, it?s an accepted practice among folks who are trying to get or to keep a finite number of jobs in an industry with no current inclination to expand? beyond 32 shops.

And Lombardi has been a victim of it.? We know that because, over the years, we?ve heard it.

Has it unfairly kept Lombardi out of the league for an extended period of the time?? Possibly, and if so that?s a shame.

But consider this undeniable fact:? Lombardi didn?t get an interview for any of the other six G.M. vacancies.? Not even the Jets, who conducted a scorched-earth campaign to find someone who would take the job, brought him in for an interview. If that?s a product of Lombardi being a victim of backstabbers and politics, it?s a damn shame.Regardless of how it got to this point, Lombardi now has a chance to prove Nantz right, and to prove the naysayers wrong.? If the Browns thrive, he?ll be viewed as succeeding.? If the Browns continue to struggle, he?ll be viewed as failing.Like everyone else in those positions, Lombardi has earned a chance to push the needle one way or the other.

Personal Finance For Singles! | Broken Mindset

So one of the highly respected financial planners in the country today will have a finance session for all the singles out there!

I got curious, so I asked, a couple of questions:

Why the singles?

Randell Tiongson: the habits we pick up as singles, we bring them into our married life. If you cant handle finances as a single, imagine what your married life will be? Preparation is always a good idea in finance, earlier the better. Many financial mistakes start during our single years.

What can we expect from this event?

Randell Tiongson:?Basics in personal finance and why God wants you to handle money properly.

?

It takes humility for us singles to seek advice from people who have actually been there and done that. I think one of the major reasons why the Philippines is doing good in its economy now (and will continue to do good! yeah!) is because of the financial literacy- and this event, is part of it!

Go attend!

Dubai: The Ultimate Tourism And Travel Hub - Dubai City Guide

flydubai, Dubai?s innovative low-cost airline, has announced remarkable growth figures ahead of its inaugural flight celebrations to Mal?, the capital of Maldives.

flydubai?s Chief Executive Officer, Ghaith Al Ghaith was joined at a press conference today by Laila Suhail, CEO, Dubai Events and Promotions Establishment (DEPE) and Hamad Bin Mejren, Executive Director, Business Tourism, Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) and Anita Mehra, Vice President ? Marketing & Corporate Communications, Dubai Airports to highlight the incredible passenger growth recorded from Central & Eastern Europe (CEE) plus the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and GCC markets.

The latest figures from Dubai International Airport reveal that passenger traffic from the CIS and Russia increased by 34% in Q3 2012 compared to the same period in 2011, in large part due to flydubai?s on-going expansion in this region.

Anita Mehra, Vice President ? Marketing & Corporate Communications, Dubai Airports said: ?flydubai?s growth, particularly within Russia and the CIS, has provided a tremendous boost to passenger traffic through linking Dubai to many cities in this region for the first time. The airline has played a key part in ensuring that passenger traffic at Dubai International is likely to have surpassed the projected target of 56.5 million passengers for the year as the world?s fourth busiest hub for international passengers achieved another month of double digit growth last November.?

?Commencing today, the new Mal? route will attract passengers from across the flydubai network, in particular those from the CIS, CEE and GCC. Dubai?s geographic advantages as a gateway between east and west, its established reputation as a popular year-round tourist destination, a financial centre and logistics hub, makes affordable travel across the airline?s route network accessible,? said Ghaith Al Ghaith, CEO, flydubai.

More than 40% of flydubai?s route development in 2012 concentrated on CEE and CIS cementing the airline?s commitment to expansion and connectivity. The airline now operates to 16 destinations in the region including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Turkmenistan and Ukraine.

flydubai?s GCC network is also the largest of all Middle Eastern carriers, with 265 flights per week to Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

Now the second-largest airline operating out of Dubai International Airport, flydubai?s impressive year-on-year growth figures have been driven by its rapidly expanding network and fleet. New figures highlighting its remarkable development include:
? 285% growth in passenger numbers from the CIS and CEE markets in 2012 compared to 2011, plus a 114% increase in the number of flights over the same period.
? 65% growth in passenger numbers from the GCC in 2012 compared to 2011, and a 36% growth in the number of flights over the same period.

Speaking during the busy month-long Dubai Shopping Festival, DEPE?s CEO, Laila Suhail, said: ?Dubai has established itself as one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, offering visitors a variety of attractions and experiences including shopping offers, family entertainment, cultural events, international sport tournaments, music festivals, and much more. The emergence of Dubai as a global landmark of excellence in tourism and events was recognized when it was awarded twice in a row as the ?World Festival and Event City 2011 and 2012? by the International Festivals and Events Association. This recognition came as a result to the close partnerships we have with the private sector to ensure that Dubai offers tourists from around the world the best holiday experience by creating a premier platform for all that makes their holiday in Dubai a memorable one.?

Hamad Bin Mejren, Executive Director, Business Tourism, DTCM, said: ?flydubai has been vital in helping promote tourism in Dubai, especially in key areas such as the CIS, CEE and the GCC markets. Tourist numbers from these areas grow each year; a fact that is undoubtedly driven by growth in airline connectivity.?

flydubai?s CEO, further commented: ?Our vision has always been to open up new markets and give more people the opportunity to travel affordably, granting them direct access to Dubai?s commercial and tourism opportunities, as well as the chance to explore beyond Dubai an array of exciting destinations on our network. The UAE?s encouraging environment has definitely been the key to the success of our vision. We would not have been able to become the world?s fastest start-up airline, if it hadn?t been to one of the fastest growing cities in the region, and possibly the world.?

flydubai operates a growing fleet of 28 Boeing 737-800 aircraft, to cater to increasing demand from both the business and leisure passengers across its route map.

Kim Dotcom Touts New Site as Legal, 'Fresh Start' - The Hollywood ...

Fairfax Media/Getty Images

SYDNEY - Indicted Internet entrepreneur Kim Dotcom formally unveiled his new file sharing and cloud storage service Mega in a press conference from his mansion near Auckland, New Zealand on Sunday, arguing that it was legal and made possible because of the shutdown of Megaupload.

"This fresh start for Mega is a good thing,? the German-born, New Zealand resident said during the press conference, which was live streamed online ahead of what was billed as a lavish Sunday night launch party for the new site at his mansion.

He even argued that the downfall of his former website Megaupload made the new site possible. "It wouldn't have even been possible to do this," news organization Fairfax NZ quoted him as saying. "No one else who is currently in business in the file storage arena can just update their site and be like us, you have to start from scratch."

In an interview with Reuters, meanwhile, Dotcom emphasized that the new site launch was not meant to be revenge on Hollywood or U.S. authorities. "This is not some kind of finger to the U.S. government or to Hollywood," he said.

And he added: "Legally, there's just nothing there that could be used to shut us down. This site is just as legitimate and has the right to exist as Dropbox, Boxnet and other competitors," he said in reference to well-known cloud storage services.

At one point during his Sunday press conference, Dotcom even said his goal was to list the new business, which uses the company name The Privacy Company, on the New Zealand Stock Exchange.

Ahead of the launch of Mega, the Motion Picture Association of America, which claims copyright infringement by Megaupload, remained skeptical.

"We are still reviewing how this new project will operate, but we do know that Kim Dotcom has built his career and his fortune on stealing creative works," the MPAA said in a statement cited by Fairfax NZ. "We'll reserve final judgment until we have a chance to take a closer look, but given Kim Dotcom's history of damaging the consumer experience by pushing stolen, illegitimate content into the marketplace, count us as skeptical."

The Mega site launched Sunday morning New Zealand time, and within several hours over 250,000 users had registered for the site, according to Dotcom. As the site went live, he tweeted: "As of this minute one year ago #Megaupload was destroyed by the US Government. Welcome to Mega.co.nz?.

Dotcom and several associates were arrested during a raid on his mansion in outer Auckland a year ago on charges of racketeering, copyright infringement and money laundering. The charges said that Doctom?s then-website, Megaupload, enabled Internet piracy and illegal downloading through its file sharing service.

Hearings about a possible extradition to the U.S. are due to be heard in New Zealand in March. Dotcom said Sunday he was hoping to stay in New Zealand if the extradition proceedings fail.

"My biggest fear is if we succeed, will there be an end - will that be enough to say, 'OK, we made a mistake, leave this guy alone' or will the people in government and the senior people in law enforcement take this defeat and be bitter about it and try and find something else,? he told the press conference.

The new Mega site has been designed by Dotcom and Mathias Ortmann, Bram van der Kolk, and Finn Batato, Dotcom?s co-accused in the Megaupload case, while industry veteran Tony Lentinos serves as the CEO.

Mega.co.nz, like Megaupload, allows users to store and share large files, providing registered users with 50 gigabytes of free storage. The key difference is an encryption and decryption feature for data transfers. The decryption keys for uploaded files are held by the users, not Mega, which means the company can't see what is in the files being shared. Dotcom can therefore argue that Mega can't be held liable for content it can not see, according to Fairfax NZ.

"Even if we wanted to, we can't go into your file and snoop and see what you have in there," the company says in an online introduction. ?We are a dedicated group of technologists who were given the time, opportunity and Internet access to build an awesome cloud storage service that will help protect your privacy. We have programmed this Internet service from scratch in Auckland, New Zealand. Unlike most of our competitors, we use a state of the art browser based encryption technology where you, not us, control the keys.?
