Suspects in Atlanta cheating scandal surrender

ATLANTA (AP) ? The first of more than 30 defendants expected to surrender Tuesday in Atlanta's school cheating scandal have turned themselves in to authorities.

Fulton County Jail records show that Tameka Goodson was in custody early Tuesday after being booked into jail on charges of racketeering and making false statements and writings. Goodson was an instructional coach at Kennedy Middle School.

Her attorney, Raymond Lail, told WAGA-TV that Goodson is "absolutely not guilty of these charges."

News media outlets reported that a second suspect, Usher/Collier Heights Elementary School test coordinator Donald Bullock, turned himself in around 6 a.m.

Thirty-five Atlanta educators, including former Superintendent Beverly Hall, are named in a 65-count indictment that alleges a broad conspiracy involving cheating on standardized tests.

The defendants face a Tuesday deadline to surrender.

April Fool crushed by hi-tech marketing..

By Alastair Macdonald

LONDON (Reuters) - The April Fool is dead.

Or at least the gentle jester of the common folk has metastised into a corporate colossus controlled by global marketing executives, bestriding the Internet to force familiar brands ever deeper into the collective consciousness.

So while Google extended a tradition dating back, well, a decade or so, in poking fun at its own ubiquity - introducing a database of smells and shutting down its YouTube service - it was fitting that old-fashioned, paper-based media poked fun on Monday at the power of machines over our minds.

In Britain, where newspapers have long relished the ancient art of goading the gullible on April 1, the Guardian offered its leftish, liberal readers "augmented reality" spectacles to let them "see the world through the Guardian's eyes at all times".

By staring at a restaurant, cinema or retail product and the paper's critics' reviews would come into vision without all the hassle of reaching for the phone, wrote the Guardian's anagrammatic correspondent Lois P. Farlo. And "anti-bigotry technology" would screen out offending op-ed columns should any reader happen to pick up a copy of the right-wing Daily Mail.

Fantasy meets reality, however, with a payoff line noting the imminent appearance in stores of Google Glass, which lets wearers view information in front of their eyes and take video.

Google itself, which has championed the art of April Fools Day marketing, offered visitors to its google.com search engine a beta-version of a new technology, Google Nose - "the new scent-sation in search", a kind of olfactory world wide web.

In a corporation-wide push for the global funny-bone, the company also offered gags on its Gmail email service - poking fun at innovation with a video explaining new, Gmail Blue would be... blue; Google Maps offered a treasure hunting mode and old parchment style navigation; and Google's YouTube unit "revealed" that the video-sharing site had all along been a giant contest and would now shut down to judge the winner.

New products and services were fair game for other brands keen to show their lighter side: Japanese telecoms company KDDI offered a mobile phone that was actually a bed - to save ever having to get up; a blog at Twitter, or rather "twttr", said users who wanted vowels in their microblogs would have to pay.

Procter and Gamble's mouthwash brand Scope offered a new "Bacon" flavor - "For breath that sizzles".

German carmaker BMW offered British readers excited at the impending arrival of a royal baby the P.R.A.M. (Postnatal Royal Auto Mobile) complete with picture of a sportily styled buggy and corgis at Windsor Castle - inquiries to Joe.King@bmw.co.uk.

SATIRE

In the more traditional realm of news-based fun, Yahoo's French website led its front page with the announcement that, to save money, President Francois Hollande would move his offices from the Elysee Palace to one of Paris's grittier suburbs.

"Nesta Vowles" had a story in Britain's Daily Mail about owls being trained, Hogwarts-style, to deliver internal mail in an office. It carried photographs of what it called the "Roy-owl Mail". The rival Daily Express said Queen Elizabeth was renting out rooms at Buckingham Palace - but, perhaps fearing for its switchboard, hastened to tell readers that this was a joke.

The Sun mocked up a shot of Mick Jagger in a tent and said the millionaire Rolling Stones were getting into practice for playing at the Glastonbury rock festival by spending Easter out of doors - at the Rolf Apilo campsite, of course.

In a more sharply satirical vein, the Independent took aim at plans to control the British press by reporting that a pro-regulation lobby group, backed by celebrity victims of media intrusion, was being consulted by foreign governments including Burma and Sudan on how to deal with troublesome journalists.

The Times reflected back to a gentler age with a story of newly discovered diaries by a 19th-century army officer that quoted "experts" comparing them to two famous historical hoaxes - Piltdown Man's fake "pre-human" bones and the Hitler Diaries.

Such heavy-handedness seemed an admission of defeat for a genre whose heyday in more innocent times saw the BBC bombarded with calls for seed catalogues after it broadcast a news item on "spaghetti trees" in 1957; 20 years later, would-be tourists called the Guardian for information on how to get to the idyllic - but sadly entirely typographical - island of San Seriffe.

It took French post office, La Poste, to highlight the struggle for survival faced by traditional media in a new technological age; it issued a press release announcing that airborne drones were delivering newspapers to people's homes.

Blurring the lines between mirth and marketing, Britain's Daily Mirror carried a story on the launch of glass-bottomed airliners - offering special sightseeing trips over Loch Ness. It would, it said, be operated by Richard Branson's Virgin airline - which duly carried its own online advert for the new planes, along with publicity for its real new domestic service.

With April Fools Day ever more an ad man's dream rather than a moment for pranks in the playground, Coca-Cola put an ironic, postmodern twist on the whole bluff-or-double-bluff atmosphere by advertising a relaunched vanilla version of the fizzy drink in Britain: The slogan? "It's back! - (no really, it is)".

If the stress of sifting fact from fiction seemed too much, particularly for fellow journalists writing reports from the frontline of foolery, once could have left it to Britain's Metro newspaper to do the legwork and make things easier.

Its 2013 "round-up of the best jokes" from other media included a BBC story on NASA's Mars rover tweeting that bullying by Internet trolls was forcing it off Twitter, the Telegraph on rabbits bred with human ears and a supermarket press release offering to deliver food via a 3D printer.

Trouble is, those were all made up by Metro. April Fools!

Lisa Rinna On 'Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills': Season 4 Cast Rumors

Watch out Lisa Vanderpump, another Lisa -- Lisa Rinna -- could be heading to "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills."

According to RadarOnline, Rinna has been approached to join the Season 4 cast of Bravo's "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills." "Lisa already knows people at Bravo and they really like her. She?s funny but she?s got a great sense of humor so she can send zingers," a source told the gossip site.

In 2011, Rinna revealed she was close to joining the show's cast for Season 1. "We were in discussions originally," Rinna said. "I was up for it, and at the time I did my show instead of 'Beverly Hills.' It was part of the process, but then my show came along so I ended up doing our show." The show Rinna referred to was "Harry Loves Lisa" on TV Land.

In February 2013, Rinna and Bravo's Andy Cohen discussed the possibility of her joining the cast. "I don?t know what it would be like once you get in that rat?s nest of it all," she said.

"Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" is reportedly going to shake up its cast for the fourth season. Adrienne Maloof has already left the series and reports indicate Taylor Armstrong and Camille Grammer will also bid the series goodbye. Faye Resnick is also reportedly done with the series. RadarOnline previously reported Baroness Monica Von Neumann is also in talks to join the cast.

Bravo has yet to officially announce any new cast members.

Pakistani woman makes history with run in May vote

KHAR, Pakistan (AP) ? A 40-year-old Pakistani housewife has made history by becoming the first woman to run for parliament from the country's northwest tribal region, a highly conservative area that is a haven for Islamist militants.

Badam Zari told The Associated Press on Monday that she will participate in the May 11 election to bring greater attention to problems facing women, which she believes the government has ignored.

"I want to reach the assembly to become a voice for women, especially those living in the tribal areas," Zari said.

Zari is from Bajur, part of Pakistan's semiautonomous tribal region bordering Afghanistan. The area is mostly populated by Pashtun tribesmen who have very conservative views toward women. Most women in the tribal region are uneducated, rarely work outside the home and wear long, flowing clothes that cover most of their skin when they appear in public.

Zari spoke to reporters at a press conference Monday wearing a colorful shawl wrapped around her body and head, with only her eyes showing.

Bajur is one of the many areas in the tribal region where the army has battled Taliban militants who are waging a bloody insurgency against the government. The militants have a history of using violence to enforce their hardline views on women.

Last fall, the Taliban in a different part of the northwest shot 15-year-old schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai in the head in an unsuccessful attempt to kill her because she resisted the militants' views and was a strong advocate of girls' education.

Zari, who finished high school and does not have any children, said she filed the paperwork necessary to run for office on Sunday in Khar, the main town in Bajur. She was accompanied by her husband, who she said fully backed her decision to run for a seat in the National Assembly.

"This was a difficult decision, but now I am determined and hopeful society will support me," Zari said.

Men in Bajur and other parts of the tribal region have historically discouraged women to vote, saying they should remain at home according to local traditions.

Far fewer women vote than men in other parts of Pakistan as well, and females remain underrepresented in the country's politics. But there are examples of Pakistani women holding very powerful political positions in the country, such as the late former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

Zari said she hopes she can convince women to come out to vote. Out of the roughly 186,000 registered voters in her constituency, about 67,000 are women, according to government records.

Under Pakistan's political system, the winning candidate is the one who receives the most votes ? not necessarily a majority ? meaning Zari could be a strong candidate if she can get women to vote for her.

Zari said she has not yet received any threats or been discouraged from locals to run.

"My decision to contest the election will not only give courage to women in general and attract attention to their problems, but also helps negate the wrong impression about our society," Zari said. "This will reflect a true picture of our society, where women get respect."

(AP) ? Pope Francis delivered a plea for peace in his first Easter Sunday message to the world, decrying the seemingly endless conflicts in the Middle East and on the Korean peninsula after celebrating Mass at an outdoor altar before more than 250,000 people in flower-bedecked St. Peter's Square.

Francis shared in his flock's exuberance as they celebrated Christianity's core belief that Jesus Christ rose from the dead following crucifixion. After Mass, he stepped aboard an open-topped white popemobile for a cheerful spin through the joyous crowd, kissing babies and patting children on the head.

One admirer of both the pope and of the pope's favorite soccer team, Argentina's Saints of San Lorenzo, insisted that Francis take a team jersey he was waving at the pontiff. A delighted Francis obliged, briefly holding up the shirt, and the crowd roared in approval.

Francis has repeatedly put concern for the poor and suffering at the center of his messages, and he pursued his promotion of the causes of peace and social justice in the Easter speech he delivered from the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, the same vantage point above the square where he was introduced to the world as the first Latin American pope on March 13.

The Roman Catholic leader aimed his Easter greetings at "every house and every family, especially where the suffering is greatest, in hospitals, in prisons." Francis prayed that Jesus would inspire people to "change hatred into love, vengeance into forgiveness, war into peace."

As popes before him have, he urged Israelis and Palestinians to resume peace talks and end a conflict that "has lasted all too long." And, in reflecting on the two-year-old Syrian crisis, Francis asked, "How much suffering must there still be before a political solution" can be found?

The pope also expressed desire for a "spirit of reconciliation" on the Korean peninsula, where North Korea says it has entered "a state of war" with South Korea. He also decried warfare and terrorism in Africa, as well as what he called the 21st century's most extensive form of slavery: human trafficking.

The first pontiff to come from the Jesuits, an order with special concern for the poor, and the first pope to name himself after St. Francis, a medieval figure who renounced wealth to preach to the down-and-out, Francis lamented that the world is "still divided by greed looking for easy gain."

Earlier, wearing cream-colored vestments, Francis celebrated Mass on the esplanade in front of the basilica at an altar set up under a white canopy. He frequently bowed his head as if in silent reflection.

The sun competed with clouds in the sky Sunday, but the square was a riot of floral color in Rome, where chilly winter has postponed the blossoming of many flowers. Yellow forsythia and white lilies shone, along with bursts of lavender and pink, from potted azalea, rhododendron, wisteria and other plants.

Francis thanked florists from the Netherlands for donating the flowers. He also advised people to let love transform their lives, or as he put it, "let those desert places in our hearts bloom."

The Vatican had prepared a list of brief Easter greetings in 65 languages, but Francis didn't read them. The Vatican didn't say why not, but has said that the new pope, at least for now, feels at ease using Italian, the everyday language of the Holy See. Francis also has stressed his role as a pastor to his flock, and, as Bishop of Rome, Italian would be his language.

The pontiff improvised his parting words to the crowd. He repeated his Easter greeting to those "who have come from all over the world to this square at the heart of Christianity" as well as to those "linked by modern technology," a reference to TV and radio coverage as well as social media.

Francis added that he was especially remembering "the weakest and the neediest" and praying that all of humanity be guided along "the paths of justice, love and peace."

In another departure from Easter tradition, Francis won't be heading for some post-holiday relaxation at the Vatican's summer palace in Castel Gandolfo, in the hills southeast of Rome. That retreat is already occupied by his predecessor, Benedict XVI, who went there in the last hours of his papacy on Feb. 28. Benedict became the first pope in 600 years to resign from the position, and eventually is to move back to the Vatican, after a convent there is readied for him.

Francis so far has declined to move into Benedict's former apartment in the Apostolic Palace, into the rooms whose studio overlooks St. Peter's Square. He is still in the Vatican hotel where earlier this month he was staying along with other cardinals participating in the secret conclave to choose Benedict's successor.

While Francis has just begun to make his mark on the church, it is plain he has little desire to embrace much of the pomp customarily associated with the office.
