Summer Foot Health ? Giving Feet and Ankles a Vacation From ...

Spread The Word:

Columbus, OH (Vocus/PRWEB) April 12, 2011

If theres a time on the calendar people look forward to, its barefoot season especially in the northern climates where it seems like boot season will never end. But whether its dreams of long walks on the beach or just padding around the yard, a little extra care of feet and ankles can keep people healthy and mobile all season long.

Dr. Terrence M. Philbin, board-certified orthopedic surgeon and co-founder of FootSourceMD, says going barefoot is nothing to be rushed into. We all need to give ourselves time to adapt to the stresses of walking without shoes, and folks with Diabetes need to take extra precautions to avoid injury.

Dr. Philbin explains that over the winter, feet lose their natural strength. Our ankles and arches grow accustomed to being cooped up in boots and tight fitting shoes, and as a result, our feet grow de-conditioned.

As a result, by the time barefoot season arrives, feet are hardly ready for flimsy flip-flops let alone long walks.

This is why Dr. Philbin advises easing into going barefoot, gradually strengthening the muscles and tendons that support the ankle and arch. Start slow, taking short walks without shoes, and allowing periods of recovery. After a few weeks of spending more and more time on your bare or stocking feet, you should be ready for a typical walk on the beach. Yet even for people with conditioned feet, Dr. Philbin encourages frequent rest breaks, and taking the time to cultivate a healthy awareness of the dangers and benefits of walking on sand.

Many athletic programs and fitness advocates have observed the benefits of training in the sand; the natural cushioning and slight surface instability have been shown to build strength for intense running. Sand running isnt for the novice runner or a person with Diabetes, but for a person who has reached a high level of fitness, it can yield great rewards.

Elite athletes are especially aware of the dangers of sand: unprotected feet are prone to injury from sharp stones or glass and metal debris, and exposure to hot, abrasive sand or pavement can also dry out the skin, causing sores to develop.

More seriously, for a person with Diabetes experiencing the effects of nerve damage or neuropathy, the hazards of going barefoot might not be felt until its too late, points out Dr. Philbin. Hes seen how foot sores can become open and infected, and how glass can become embedded in a foot, resulting in dangerous infection, lost toes or worse.

Dr. Philbin advises people with Diabetes to take care to examine his or her feet each and every time going barefoot, ideally with the help of a mirror or another set of eyes. But to be truly safe, the truth can hurt: Due to the risks, says Dr. Philbin, a person with Diabetes should avoid going barefoot altogether.

Thankfully, theres still an option that indulges the sense of summer freedom: sandals.

Diabetic Crocs, specifically the Crocs Unisex Cloud, are beneficial, providing aeration to keep the feet cool and dry, as well as toe protection and arch support, says Dr. Philbin, stressing that only Diabetic Crocs deliver these benefits. A person with Diabetes will still want to consider wearing specialty socks, says Dr. Philbin. These provide necessary compression and support, and provide an extra layer of protection.

Many sandals found at the department store or gift shop dont provide the support necessary to promote healthy feet, but there are several styles available that are designed with arch and ankle support in mind. These include sandals made by Aravon, Ziera and Dunham.

According to Dr. Philbin, people with a favorite pair of sandals neednt worry. Providing its not a cheap flip flop, most sandals can accommodate many insoles and arch supports. A breathable ankle brace can be used, too.

However people enjoy the warm weather, there are plenty of ways to keep feet happy and healthy. And with the right care, come fall, a person can have enough memories of summer walks to carry them clear through to next barefoot season.

Samsung teases Android 41 with Premium Suite for Galaxy Note 101

Samsung has already begun delivery of Android 4.1 for the Galaxy Note 10.1 in some parts of the world, but in a move that'll no doubt add to the anticipation, the company has now revealed Premium Suite as an accompaniment to the OS upgrade. Along with Jelly Bean, users can expect greater Multi Window functionality, which brings the ability to open up to 16 apps at a time, each which can be moved, resized and pinned to remain on top. Samsung's Air View is also incorporated within Premium Suite, which allows users to preview appointments, emails, video and the like by hovering the S Pen above the screen. Not to stop there, Samsung is also upping the ante with new additions such as Easy Clip, Quick Command, Photo Note, Paper Artist and an enhanced S Note app. No definitive timeline is known for Samsung's rollout of Premium Suite and Android 4.1, although it's now clear that "soon" can't come quickly enough. In the meantime, be sure to hop the break to preview all the new features that are on deck.

monde condo torontoTHE GOOD

It doesn't get much better than a park right outside your door. And a new one, to boot (meaning Toronto's Sharpie-equipped punks probably haven't even gotten to these benches yet). Sherbourne Common is right next to the Monde Condos site, meaning residents will be privy to its green space, playground, skating rink, and other amenities right when they step outside the building. And all for the low price of $650 (give or take) per square foot! In all seriousness, it is somewhat of a rarity to find a new high rise in downtown Toronto with a park right next door ("parkettes" don't count ? sorry, Financial District), and it doesn't get much better (or newer, at least) than Sherbourne Common. This is a perk that resonates especially with pet parents, who know that their puppies deserve more than a little plot of grass or two. Bitches know what I'm talking about.

But onto the building itself. I'm glad to see that Monde has done away with the pitiful 300-something-square-foot bachelor, perhaps recognizing that we humans tend to share our living spaces with other physical objects. Of course, I'm referring to items such as beds, tables, and perhaps an item of clothing or two ? items otherwise known as "superfluous non-necessities" to developers touting "condominiums" of parking space square footage. The smallest suite in Monde is a still-livable 483 square feet (plus 55 square feet of balcony), which is not huge by any means, but does offer some room to breathe.

monde condos torontoThe quality of layout in Monde depends largely on the suite, but it is worth noting that all units come with a standard kitchen island/dining table combination ? a definite bonus considering many condo kitchens can be hard to outfit. As well, some one-plus-den units come with a powder room and a full bathroom, and most layouts include bedrooms with actual windows.

And obligatory nerd remark: Monde will be situated in the "Intelligent Community" of Waterfront Toronto, meaning residents will have access to internet speeds up to 100 times faster than me. And you. And everyone else in the city. Damn.

THE BAD

I don't get it, Lower Sherbourne. What's with you and gargantuan structures that occupy and dominate full city blocks? It's a little...off-putting. Sure, it looks great from a bird's-eye rendering, but what about from the sidewalk when all of these log podiums are actually built? Monde is guilty of the city-block-base (does someone need to take a look at zoning here, or what?) with its hefty 12-storey podium at its foot. Not exactly a scenic view for those looking out from Sherbourne Common.

Now, every developer likes to tout its supposedly "groundbreaking" design, and in this case Great Gulf is no exception. I believe the big talking point here is the cantilevered balconies on the tower's odd floors. And yes, they are quite interesting-looking, but they strike me more as ejected stapler trays than breathtaking examples architectural innovation. Or maybe I should just stop staring at my desk. But I wonder, too, about the functionality; if two people want to sit out on the balcony at the same time, must they sit front seat/back seat? Or can they squeeze side by side?

monde condo torontoSpeaking of squeezing, let's talk about density. Lower Sherbourne is poised to receive a considerable influx of new residents in the next few years, due mostly to the completion of this and other condo projects in the area. Now, the same increase in density could be said of many other neighbourhoods in Toronto, the exception being that Lower Sherbourne will be going from relative desolation (relative ? I said relative!) to thousands upon thousands of new residents in a relatively short period of time.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, mind you, but it is likely that there will be at least a few growing pains. Plus, the building itself is a mini-neighbourhood in the sky (and yet, only three of Monde's five elevators are designated for the tower), and with so many people sharing a few common elements, wear and tear on the structure will inevitably get pricey. Add up the (ever-rising, most likely) cost of monthly maintenance fees, plus hydro, plus water, plus gas, plus property taxes, plus interest, and let's hope you have enough left over for that pesky "principle" or whatever it is. Living here will not be cheap, but then again, where is?

monde condo torontoTHE VERDICT

The view from the inside isn't half bad. Let's just hope Sherbourne Common visitors like shade.

What do you think? Would you live here? Add your comments to the thread below.

Can Ecstasy help veterans fight off post-traumatic stress disorder?

A new follow-up study shows long-lasting improvement for soldiers given MDMA during psychotherapy

The question: Can MDMA, better known as Ecstasy, help soldiers coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan combat war's psychological toil? Ecstasy is experiencing a renaissance among young party-goers thanks to a resurgent rave scene. But the popular drug, which can induce brief flashes of euphoria and temporarily make users more affectionate, has also been the focus of a controversial psychotherapy experiment to help war veterans cope with post-traumatic test syndrome, or PTSD. A new study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology by husband and wife team Michael and Ann Mithoefer investigates the long-term effectiveness of Ecstasy as an anti-PTSD tool.

How it was tested: In the original trial, 20 patients with PTSD who had proven unresponsive to conventional psychotherapy were given either MDMA or a placebo as part of their therapy sessions. These sessions were long, lasting eight hours each. More recently, the researchers checked in with the subjects.

The outcome: The original results showed that patients given Ecstasy were more responsive, posting a "spectacular" 85 percent response rate, says Arran Frood at Nature. (The placebo group hovered at 30 percent.) According to researchers, the?MDMA "decreases levels of fear and defensiveness and increases trust between patient and practitioner when used in a clinical setting." In the recent follow-up study, only two participants from the?MDMA group had relapsed. No one who took part in the study reported any ill effects from taking the drug.?

What experts say: "We've now shown that the results from the initial study were not some transitory and superficial afterglow," said study author Rick Doblin, founder of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies in Santa Cruz, Calif., which funded the husband and wife team's research. But not all experts consider the results substantive. Jennifer Wild, a consultant clinical psychiatrist at King's College London, argues the small sample size means the placebo effect cannot be ruled out, and notes that, at the time of the follow-up study, eight of the participants were still in psychotherapy and 12 were still on psychiatric meds. "That's quite a lot in my opinion," she tells Nature. "Ordinarily when people recover they don't have further treatment."

What the soldiers say: "I feel survivor's guilt, both for coming back from Iraq alive and now for having a chance to do this therapy," Anthony, a 25-year-old veteran who asked that his last name not be used,?tells The New York Times. "I'm a different person because of it." There is now "an evidence base for this?MDMA?therapy and a plausible story about what may be going on in the brain to account for the effects,"?says Brig. Gen. Loree Sutton, a psychiatrist who recently retired from the Army.?When it comes to the mental well-being of those who serve, "we should leave our politics at the door and not be afraid to follow the data."
