Skin is an important part of human body. It is an outer covering or shell that protects human body organs from environmental hazards. In a common man?s language skin is a cover for internal organs in human body.
We can find people around us who are curious about their skin and people who neglect their skin. Being enthusiastic and eager to put efforts and attain a beautiful and healthy is good but one needs to move in right direction.
It is important to know about skin and its functions in detail. This will help you learn about skin care and its importance in detail.
Skin is the thin layer of tissue forming the natural outer covering of the body. It is the largest organ of the human body. It provides a protective shield to internal organs, retains body fluids and helps regulating body temperature. Skin is also sensitive to external stimuli. Skin contains pigmentation or melanin necessary to absorb some of the dangerous ultraviolet radiation in sunlight.
Skin types:
Skin of the human body can be divided in to various types. Skin type differ from an individual to other. Here is a description of different types of skin and their characteristics.
a) Normal skin:
Normal skin can be characterized by a fine even texture. It has a smooth and supple surface. This type of skin is known for its ability to maintain a good balance between oil and moist contents. The skin appears flawless and does not suffer from common problems such as spots and blemishes. The skin is healthy and requires gentle treatment.
b) Dry skin:
The skin lacks moisture and usually has a dry parched appearance. It can flake easily. Dry skin is more vulnerable to fine lines and wrinkles. Dry skin is incapable of holding moisture for nourishment. It also does not produce enough sebum required for skin to remain healthy. Cold weather is a big problem for this skin. Regular application of night creams and moisturizers help this skin retain its health and glow.
c) Oily skin:
This is often known as ?problem skin?. This type of skin is vulnerable to serious skin problems such as blackheads, white heads, spots and pimples. The skin easily attracts dirt and dust from the environment due to its tendency of over secretion of sebum.
d) Combination skin:
One of the most common skin types, the combination skin is an amalgamation of dry and oily skin portion of the face. The centra panel ?forehead, nose and chin? or the T-zone is greasy. Other areas including cheeks, eyes and mouth are dry.
Proper skin care regime and diet plays an important role in maintaining healthy skin. The first step towards this is determination of your skin type. You require knowing about your skin type before taking care of it.
How to determine skin type:
The best thing to do to determine your skin type is to wipe your face with a day tissue in the morning when you wake up. If you find grease all over your face, it is oily, if there is oil only on the center panel, it is a combination skin and if there is no oil, it is either dry or normal skin. Normal skin feels smooth and supple.
Once you determine your skin type, it is time to tie your shoe laces and begin taking care of it right away.
In our next chapter you would learn more about skin type and tips on caring a particular skin type.
