Microsoft: 76 Million Xbox 360 Consoles Sold

12 Feb, 2013 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Xbox Live community now has 46 million members, a 15% growth since 2011

Microsoft is eyeing its Xbox 360 console as a conduit to delivering original and third-party content into homes, executives told a digital media conference.

This year Microsoft is planning to launch more than 40 voice-controlled, customized TV and entertainment apps on Xbox, Nancy Tellem, president of entertainment and digital media at Microsoft, told a digital media event. The software behemoth is mirroring efforts made by Netflix and Amazon in bowing original content aimed at competing against traditional media.

?We want to partner with the industry to bring entertainment into a new era,? Tellem said. ?It?s an era when interactive entertainment becomes the greatest form of all entertainment.?

As backdrop to the recent launch of Los Angeles-based Xbox Entertainment Studios, Microsoft disclosed updated data on Xbox 360, including the fact it has sold 76 million units since its 2005 launch. The tally is three times the number of original Xbox gaming consoles sold since its 2001 launch.

Speaking Feb. 11 at D: Dive into Media, Yusuf Mehdi, VP of Microsoft?s interactive entertainment business, said a Kinect sensor now accompanies about one third of Xbox 360 consoles; the company has sold 24 million Kinect sensors since launch.

Mehdi said the Xbox LIVE community has grown to 46 million members, a 15% growth since last year. 2012 also marked the Xbox?s biggest year for entertainment and games usage.

?We believe that Xbox is being used by more people in the household, during more hours in the day and for more forms of entertainment,? said Yusuf Mehdi, VP of Microsoft?s Interactive Entertainment Business. ?People are using Xbox in the morning to work out with the Kinect Nike+ Fitness program, kids are watching cartoons, families are enjoying movies, and of course people are playing games like ?Halo 4.??

Indeed, Xbox featured interactive polling during last year?s presidential debates, with viewers submitting 3 million answers to on-screen questions during a live telecast of one of the debates. Xbox aired an interactive red carpet experience for last weekend?s Grammy Awards and will be doing the same for the 85th Academy Awards Feb. 24.
