With snow starting to fly thoughts turn to winter sports. One of the most cost-effective ways to gear up is to hit an area ski swap and sale.

?It?s a feeding frenzy on ski equipment. It?s like putting blood in the ocean,? says Scott Wasem, describing last year?s Snowhaven Winter Ski Swap in Grangeville.

It was the first swap Snowhaven had in about a decade and was a huge success, says Wasem, the ski hill?s manager.

This year?s Dec. 1 swap at Grangeville High School coincides with a craft fair at the elementary school and a showing of a Warren Miller movie at 2:15 p.m. at the Blue Fox theater downtown.
?We?re just trying to make a big day of it up in Grangeville,? says Wasem.

Here are details on three of the area?s biggest upcoming ski swaps:

MOSCOW ? The University of Idaho?s 38th Annual Outdoor Equipment Sale and Ski Swap is at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, at the University of Idaho Student Recreation Center?s MAC court.

Equipment typically includes skis, snowboards, rafts, kayaks, wetsuits, tents, PFDs, sleeping bags, snow shoes, canoes, dry bags, climbing equipment, bikes and more. Admission is free. Anyone is welcome to sell their equipment for a donation of $5 per table. Donations go to the UI Vandal Ski Team which sponsors the event with the UI Outdoor Program. All sales are the responsibility of the individual.

The sale will also include equipment from retailers including Hyperspud Sports, Northwest River Supplies, Alpine Ski Wholesalers and others. Promotional booths will include Schweitzer Mountain Resort, Silver Mountain, Brundage Mountain Resort and Lookout Pass.

GRANGEVILLE ? The Snowhaven Winter Ski Swap is Dec. 1 at Grangeville High School.

Sale hours are 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Technicians will be available to help people with gear. Along with used equipment a McCall vendor will be selling high end new and slightly used equipment at discount prices. Punch cards and family passes for Snowhaven will also be for sale.

People wishing to sell gear can bring it to check-in from 4-6:30 p.m. Nov. 30 or 8-9:30 a.m. Dec. 1. All equipment will be inspected and must meet current industry standards for safety to be accepted for the swap. All items not sold must be claimed between 1:30 and 2 p.m. or they will become the property of Snowhaven. A 20 percent fee will be assessed by the swap on individual sales. Fees will be donated to Snowhaven.

PULLMAN ? Discounted gear will be on sale Dec. 7-8 at the 38th Annual Washington State University Ski and Gear Swap.

Besides a large selection of winter gear, season passes for local ski and snowboard resorts will be on sale. The sale is 6-9 p.m. Dec. 7, and 9-2 p.m. Dec. 8 at the Hollingbery Fieldhouse adjacent to the WSU Football Stadium. Admission is $1 per person. Children under age 12 are admitted free. Free event parking can be found in the yellow parking lot south of Beasley Coliseum.

Individuals wishing to sell equipment must bring items to the Fieldhouse from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Dec. 7. A charge of 75 cents per item for sale is required to enter merchandise into the swap. If the merchandise sells, a fee of 16 percent will be assessed. Unsold equipment and checks may be picked up the week immediately following the event or at the Outdoor Recreation Center between 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. weekdays. Items and checks not picked up by 6 p.m. Dec. 14 will be considered abandoned and donated to the Outdoor Recreation Center.
