Spectacular New Views of Saturn's Polar Vortex

It's because using telescopes on such a vast distances corrupts the colour. Remember, that the colours we can see, and appreciate are bound in to a narrow band of frequencies, and taking pictures on a single frequency make better pictures. Of course, you could do 3 distinct images, in the red, green, blue frequency bands, but by that time you make three photos, Cassini changes its position considerably, hence the photos will not cover the same angle. It's fairly big thing to get a single frequency band phot

Lawrence Guyot, civil rights leader, dies after decades of activism

Lawrence Guyot, a 73-year-old civil rights activist who survived beatings and went to prison in Mississippi in the 60s, died late Thursday night. Guyot was a long-time advocate of voter rights.

    By Associated Press / November 25, 2012

Lawrence Guyot, at age 23, removed his shirt in Jackson, Miss., to show newsmen where he says Greenwood and Winona police beat him with leather slapsticks, in June of 1963. His daughter Julie Guyot-Diangone said he died late Thursday or early Friday outside Washington, D.C. at the age of 73.

Guyot?had a history of heart problems and suffered from diabetes, and died at home in Mount Rainier, Md., his daughter Julie Guyot-Diangone said late Saturday. She said he died sometime Thursday night; other media reported he passed away Friday.

A Mississippi native,?Guyot?(pronounced GHEE-ott) worked for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and served as director of the 1964 Freedom Summer Project, which brought thousands of young people to the state to register blacks to vote despite a history of violence and intimidation by authorities. He also chaired the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, which sought to have blacks included among the state's delegates to the 1964 Democratic National Convention. The bid was rejected, but another civil rights activist, Fannie Lou Hamer, addressed the convention during a nationally televised appearance.

Guyot?was severely beaten several times, including at the notorious Mississippi State Penitentiary known as Parchman Farm. He continued to speak on voting rights until his death, including encouraging people to cast ballots for President Barack Obama.

"He was a civil rights field worker right up to the end," Guyot-Diangone said.

Guyot?participated in the 40th anniversary of the Freedom Summer Project to make sure a new generation could learn about the civil rights movement.

"There is nothing like having risked your life with people over something immensely important to you," he told The Clarion-Ledger in 2004. "As Churchill said, there's nothing more exhilarating than to have been shot at ? and missed."

His daughter said she recently saw him on a bus encouraging people to register to vote and asking about their political views. She said he was an early backer of gay marriage, noting that when he married a white woman, interracial marriage was illegal in some states. He met his wife Monica while they both worked for racial equality.

"He followed justice," his daughter said. "He followed what was consistent with his values, not what was fashionable. He just pushed people along with him."

Daily Kos: In 400 Days the Health Insurance Cliff will Kick In. For Real.

It's actually not too complicated. A couple multiplications and subtractions (and there's a table just below if you don't care to follow the math). The law says that if you, as an individual, make between 300% and 400% of the federal poverty level, the Federal government will provide a tax credit for any premiums you pay for standard insurance bought on the exchanges in excess of 9.5% of your income. But if you make more than 400% of federal poverty level, no tax credit will be available. (The astute reader may have just figured out the problem.)

The Federal Poverty Level (FPL) in most states is $11,170. Four hundred percent of that is $44680. Nine and a half percent of that is $4245. Suppose you are paying $500/month in premiums for your health insurance (not a particularly high rate if you are an older person but not yet eligible for Medicare) or $6000/year. Assuming you are eligible for the subsidy, then in 2014 the Federal government will effectively pay $1755 of that (the excess above $4245), and you will only have to pay $4245.

But what if you make $44681? Now you make more than four hundred percent of the Federal poverty level. Now the federal government will pay nothing -- $0.00 -- to help you with your health insurance premiums; you will have to pay it all. You just fell over a $1754 cliff.

Who, you might ask, could have written such a stupid law? That's a good question. Unfortunately, I don't have a good answer. Congress.

If you make If you pay You'll get But if you make You'll get
$44680 individually $6000/yr in premiums $1755 in subsidies $44681 individually $0 in subsidies
$14856 individually $4000/yr in premiums $3703 in subsidies $14857 individually $3554 in subsidies
    $88200 as a family of 4 $15000/yr in premiums $6621 in subsidies $88201 as a family of 4 $0 in subsidies
What will this mean? As far as I can tell, it will mean that a bunch of people are going get shafted. Some will have no idea they've been shafted, and the rest of them are going to be very upset when they realize how they've been shafted.

A lot of people simply don't know exactly how much they will have made in a given year until it's over and it's too late. Maybe you get that $10 you didn't think about in interest from your savings account and it pushes you over the limit, or one of your clients pays you a few days early, or your non-health-insurance-providing company gives you a $100 Christmas bonus... and suddenly you're over the limit. Your boss getting into the Christmas spirit has cost you $1500 or more. Imagine a million people suddenly realizing that if they had made a hundred dollars less they would have made a thousand dollars more...

The effect is most severe at the top, but the cliff doesn't just apply at the top end of the subsidy range (400% of FPL). If you make 133% of FPL the government will pay the cost of your premiums beyond 2% of your income. But if you make 134% of FPL the government will only the pay the cost of your premiums beyond 3% of your income. ?So if you make $14856 and your insurance premiums are $4000/yr the government would pay $3703, but if you make $14857 the government will pay only $3554, about a $150 difference. Which, if you're making less than $15000 a year, is nothing to shrug off.

    Photobucket

It gets worse if you're a family. Much, much worse. The FPL for a family of four is $22,050. Four times that is $88,200. Nine and a half percent of that is $8379. A family of four could easily spend $15,000 on insurance premiums, so the federal government would pick up $6621 of that. But if the wage earners in the famiy make a dollar more, $88,201... then SPLAT -- the family has just lost more than $6000.

So be careful come December 31st, 2014 -- do you really want to pick up that $1 bill you see lying on the sidewalk?

Income Level ( % of FPL ) Max Premium as % of Income
Less than 133% 2% of Income
    133% - 150% 3% - 4% of income
    150% - 200% 4% - 6.3% of income
    200% - 250% 6.3% - 8.05% of income
    250% - 300% 8.05% - 9.5% of income
    300% - 400% 9.5% of income

(AP Photo/Vahid Salemi)

(AP) ? It is the most impassioned day of the year for Shiite Muslims ? Ashoura, when one of the faith's most revered figures, Imam Hussein, was martyred in battle. Hundreds of thousands of Shiites who flocked to his resplendent, gold-domed shrine to commemorate him Saturday found the site has radically changed.

The shrine of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, is seeing its most extensive renovation since the 17th century. The construction is part of a push by Iraq's Shiite rulers to reinvigorate sacred shrines long neglected under former dictator Saddam Hussein, reflecting the community's steadily growing pride and power since the fall of their nemesis.

Now worshippers find the shrines' minarets coated in gold and ? in the most dramatic change ? the sweeping plaza surrounding the mosque has been covered over with a series of domes to provide shade from the hot sun in the desert city of Karbala.

Not everyone is happy with the changes. Five experts on the shrine, including three who advised on individual parts of the renovation, say the drama of the shrine has been lost.

The covering of the once-open plaza, they argue, ruined the visual experience. Pilgrims no longer can see the awe-striking view of the mosque as they pass through the sprawling, light-filled plaza, then into the dazzlingly colorful mosque, finally reaching their ultimate destination: Hussein's richly ornate tomb, they said.

"They sacrificed considerations of Islamic architecture to do it," said Haider Naji, one of the experts.

On Saturday, throngs of Shiites who came from across the country ? some marching for miles on foot in processions ? converged on the shrine, one of the holiest sites of the faith. Men cloaked in black beat giant drums, youths blew military-style bugles, and others carried platters of sweets to sustain energy, decorated with dyed pink and blue feathers.

Outside the shrine, the crowds held Ashoura's blood-soaked, emotional pageantry of grief. Men and boys dressed in white burial shrouds ? to show their willingness to die for Hussein ? whipped their backs with chains and cut their heads with knives, drenching themselves in blood to mourn his loss. Men and women wailed in mourning, breaking down into tears.

Others dressed as the historic figures from the 7th century battle ? Hussein, in green, and his enemies, in red, with turbans decked with feather plumes, leather battle vests and swords. A fountain of fake red blood bubbled before the shrine. A horse covered with a sheet stained red was led through the crowds, representing Hussein's white steed Zuljanah, which is said to have been riddled by arrows as it tried to shield its wounded master.

Ashoura marks the martyrdom of Hussein in a battle at Karbala in the deserts south of present-day Baghdad. The event is one of the defining moments in the split between the Sunni and Shiite sects of Islam.

Shiites believe Hussain's father Imam Ali was Muhammad's rightful successor and that was he unfairly passed over by the caliphs considered by Sunnis as the rightful line. Hussein led a revolt against the Damascus-based Sunni caliph, who sent an army that crushed Hussein's small band of fighters at Karbala.

In commemorations for Ashoura held by Shiites around the world Saturday, details of the battle are retold or recreated in passion plays that bring wails of sorrow and pity from the crowds.

The stories are deeply engrained in Shiites' consciousness. The agonizing thirst of Hussein's wife and children in the desert after the besieging enemy stopped their water supply. The heroic, doomed attempt to bring them water by Hussein's half-brother al-Abbas, who ? even after the enemy cut off his arms ? rode gripping the water-skin in his teeth until he died in a hail of arrows. The killing of Hussein's loyalists one by one until Hussein was alone, wounded and finally beheaded.

So strong are the passions that onlookers sometimes stone the actor playing Hussein's killer, Shimr. At a Baghdad shrine on Saturday, the play's "Shimr" broke character to weepingly ask the audience's forgiveness, pleading that someone had to take the role.

The day has often been a chance for Sunni militants to attack Shiites, whom they see as heretics. Iraq has seen repeated deadly bombings against Ashoura ceremonies in past years, though there were no immediate reports of violence this year. In Pakistan's tribal region on Saturday, a bomb blast struck an Ashoura procession, killing seven people, including three children.

The renovations at the shrine in Karbala are the latest evolution in what was once the austere, tree-marked grave of Hussein. Over the centuries, it became more ostentatious, culminating in the shrine built in the 17th century by artisans from the nearby Persian Safavid empire, according to Ghada Razouki, an expert in medieval Islamic architecture.

Under the shrine's gold-plated dome, Hussein's sarcophagus is drenched five tons of silver and 120 kilograms (260 pounds) of engraved gold. The mosque is etched inside and out with geometrical designs, verses from the Quran and the names of Muhammad's family in green, blue and yellow. Tiny mirrors reflecting light line the arched ceiling above the sarcophagus.

The current renovations, launched in 2005, aim to provide more room to crowds reaching some two million pilgrims, said Sheik Salah al-Haydari, head of the Shiite Muslim endowment, which has overall control of Iraq's Shiite shrines.

The plaza that surrounds the shrine has been covered over with the domed roof and will be expanded four-fold to 24,000 square meters (260,000 square feet) by 2013, said Mohammed Kadhem, who is leading the $50 million project. One extension of 6,000 square meters (65,000 square feet) has been completed.

The ancient wall surrounding the shrine has been replaced with multi-level buildings with extra prayer spaces, offices and a museum. The shrine's minarets were coated in gold.

Al-Haydari countered the criticisms, saying, "We are continuing the architectural style that is there, like a river continuing its path."

To recreate the dramatic open space around the shrine, urban planners reviving Karbala's old city will increase plaza space outside the site's gates, said Mohammed al-Assam of Dewan Architects.

Shiite officials are also renovating the shrine of al-Abbas next to Hussein's, that of Imam Ali in neighboring Najaf, and the shrine of his descendants in Baghdad.

The rush to improve the shrines became more determined after al-Qaeda militants in 2006 blew up the golden dome of a shrine in Samarra, north of Baghdad. The destruction of the al-Askari shrine ? now rebuilt ? underscored to Shiite officials the need to rebuild and glorify their shrines to demonstrate their growing power.

"Shiite areas are now in the hands of Shiites. What is happening is natural and it shows their control," said analyst Hadi Jalo.

In contrast to the architects, worshippers aid the changes to the once-neglected shrine should have been even grander.

"All these changes are but a little for the Imam Hussein," said Ahmad Ali, who just arrived in Karbala from Baghdad. "But thank God it's better than before: there's air conditioning, protection from the sun and rain," he said.

Speaking before walking from Baghdad to Karbala, Abdullah Ashraf, 25, said worrying about changes to the shrine misses the point.

"What makes the Hussein shrine alive is the memory of his story."

MechBass robot nails the bass guitar sound with Arduino and a stone cold groove video

End-of-year engineering school projects often pique our interest for their creativity. It's not every day that they can carry a bassline, however. James McVay's robot project for his honors year at the Victoria University of Wellington, the supremely well-named MechBass, wouldn't have much trouble keeping up with a favorite band. It centers on a custom, Arduino-compatible board that controls the plucking, fretting and damping of four strings to faithfully recreate bass guitar sounds from MIDI input. The design even accounts for the unwanted noises of actuators and motors, while virtually everything was either 3D-printed or laser-cut just for the task at hand. Sounds good? There's more in the pipeline: an upcoming Swivel robot will experiment with different playing techniques, and McVay ultimately sees his work teaching us about robotic music's interaction with human performers. For now, we'll be happy with the video after the break and hope that MechBass takes requests.

Portland political consulting firm draws national attention in recent ...

PORTLAND, Maine ? It?s not only the recently elected politicians and successful advocacy groups who are celebrating big wins in the wake of election season.

A small political consulting firm in Portland has emerged with a winning record and a national reputation for producing compelling, authentic political advertisements for television and Web.

The company, CD2 Consulting, produced some of the most memorable ads from Maine?s recent election cycle. Remember Harlan Gardner, the 90-year-old WWII veteran and Machias resident who, while sitting at the dinner table with four generations of his family, including his gay granddaughter, said ?marriage is too precious not to share?? That ad was one of CD2?s creations. Remember the York firefighters who appeared in an ad with their gay colleague? That was a CD2 ad. There were several others produced throughout the campaign, which was successful and made Maine the first state to legalize same sex marriage by popular vote.

David Farmer, communications director for Mainers United for Marriage, gives CD2 a big share of the credit for the power and recognition their ads brought to the campaign.

?They were able to turn real Maine people into household names,? said Farmer, who also served as deputy chief of staff and communications director for former Gov. John Baldacci, and writes a political blog and a weekly column for the Bangor Daily News. ?They are storytellers and were able to tell stories in 30 seconds in a way that made a real difference.?

The ads CD2 produced for Mainers United for Marriage were so effective, in fact, they were picked up around the country and used as templates for ads in other states such as Minnesota and Washington state, according to Farmer.

?They (CD2 owners) are on the verge of big, big things,? he said.

Maine?s Yes on 1 campaign had a high profile, and several ?top-notch? political consulting firms wanted to produce those television ads, Farmer said. Yet CD2 got the job. ?They won on the merits of their work, and they delivered,? he said.

Besides the Yes on 1 campaign, CD2 also produced web advertisements for Elizabeth Warren?s successful Senate campaign in Massachusetts, unseating incumbent Scott Brown; online content for Maggie Hassan?s successful gubernatorial campaign in New Hampshire; and a TV ad in support of Rep. Carol Shea-Porter?s successful Congressional race in New Hampshire.

?That?s a winning record right there,? Farmer said. ?The results speak for themselves.?

There was a time when all the big political consulting firms were in Washington, D.C., and New York City, but technology has made that model obsolete, and today consultants can work anywhere. CD2 owners Jim Cole, Aaron Duffey and David Loughran choose to work in Maine, where the three grew up in the Greater Portland area.

?It?s great to be doing what I want to be doing in the place where I want to live,? Duffey said on a recent morning in CD2?s office in Portland?s Old Port.

The company doesn?t have to be in D.C., Loughran said. ?There are probably opportunities we miss by not being there,? he said, ?but there are other opportunities we?ll gain from being here.?

CD2 is actually a conglomeration of smaller, specialty operations that each of the men ran before joining forces to offer a wider range of political consulting services.

Cole and Duffey formed Gum Spirits Productions, a film production company, in Portland in 2008. They produced independent films (Sundowning and Three Priests are two of the more well-known flicks) and TV advertisements for political campaigns, including for VoteVets.org. In 2009, they joined forces with a pair of Bowdoin College alums, Frank Chi and William Donahoe, who live in Washington, D.C., and produce websites for political campaigns. Cole and Duffey joined Chi and Donahoe ? notice the initials? ? to form CD2 in 2009.

Loughran had worked on political campaigns all over the country before returning to Maine in 2008 to form his own political communications consultancy called Mach3Media. Loughran reconnected with Duffey, who he grew up with in Gorham, upon his return to the Portland area. In 2010, he officially joined CD2.

The crew first gained national attention in February 2011 for an ad it produced about the battle in Wisconsin over Gov. Scott Walker?s attack on the collective bargaining rights of unions.

Instead of writing a 30-second script, the CD2 crew spent the entire day in snowy, 16-degree weather interviewing protesters in Madison, Wisc., as snow piled on their shoulders. ?That?s why we?re able to capture authentic moments and are able to turn what would be a good ad into a great ad,? Loughran said.

Cole, who Duffey called the ?creative genius? behind CD2, then spent the evening cutting more than three hours of raw interview footage into a 30-second ad spot, which was extremely successful and helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars in small donations in the following weeks.

The ad, which was produced for the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, got national attention. Rachel Maddow called it ?the most pointed, stand-with-the-people-who-work-for-a-living ad that we have seen for a very long time.? Lawrence O?Donnell called the ad ?beautiful film making,? and said ?I?m really quite struck by it.?

?You don?t usually get people on D.C. television talking in such effusive ways about a TV ad, but that speaks to the power of this particular one,? said Adam Green, the D.C.-based co-founder of Progressive Change Campaign Committee.

Duffey said the ad opened doors. Loughran and Duffey expect they?ll be able to leverage the success of its ads during the recent election season to grab more work on other high-profile campaigns.

Judging by the ads it?s produced, CD2?s future looks bright, Green said.

Progressive Change worked with 40 campaigns this past election season, and Green said he?d be looking for CD2 to contribute to more campaigns in the future. ?We definitely hold [CD2] out as a model for the future of ad making as we try to wean candidates off the past ? overly priced D.C. consultants doing lesser quality work,? he said.

Green said the fact CD2 is based outside D.C. is a benefit as they?re not captive to the standard talking points. ?Instead, they?re thinking outside the box,? Green said. ?They?re thinking about persuading the people on Main Street back home.?

Loughran declined to discuss CD2?s revenue except to say it has grown ?tenfold? since 2010. But Loughran and Duffey (Cole was out of the state on a shoot) don?t want CD2 to grow too big too fast.

?We don?t want to take every possible project that comes through the door,? Duffey said, because doing so would force them to not be so hands-on with the various campaigns.

?Our business will grow, and Jim, Aaron and I will continue to be principals in every campaign,? Loughran said. ?That?s how we want it to be.?

South Sudan: Sudan aerial bombardment kills 7

(AP) ? A South Sudanese official says Sudan carried out aerial bombardments of the northern part of South Sudan in the last three days killing seven people and wounding more than a dozen others.

Military spokesman Col. Philip Aguer said Friday that Sudanese Antonov planes dropped more than 27 bombs in a disputed region near the village of Kiir Adem in northern Bahr el Ghazal State.

Aguer says the attack is in violation of a security agreement signed between the two countries 54 days ago to end hostilities. South Sudan is also accusing Sudan of frustrating its efforts to resume oil production.

Give the gift of premium Web services

    16 hrs.

As you're trying to come up with great gifts for the holidays, software likely isn't the first thing that comes to mind. It can make a great gift for the right person, though, especially when they're not willing to shell out the cash themselves (as so few people are). Here are some of our favorite (and your favorite) premium Web services that not only boost productivity, but dish out a little holiday cheer too.

Note: Most of these are monthly subscriptions, so you can gift them however you like. Giving someone a few months or a year of a service is a great gift that you can tweak for your budget, and leave yourself room for the same gift next year if they really like it.

If a service doesn't offer a gift option, you can always use a prepaid credit card and give it to them for use with the service you're gifting.

    SUBSCRIPTIONS?UNDER $5 A MONTH?

    A personalized domain name
It?may sound silly for the No.?1 item on our list, but it's the cheapest subscription you can give, costing only $3.99 a year (that's 33 cents a month), and it's something everyone should have. They may not know it, but a personalized domain name can come in extremely handy, and will only get more important as time goes on. They can post their online CV or resume there, redirect it to their Twitter or Facebook page, and further control how the Internet sees you. The quicker you snatch it up before someone else with the same name, the better. We've linked to Namecheap below, since that's your favorite domain registrar, but check out our Hive Five for a few other options.

    Crashplan+
If you have a friend who still isn't backing up their data, it's the perfect time to give them the gift of bulletproof backup thanks to Crashplan. Even if they're backing up to an external drive, that isn't good enough???they need something in the cloud so no matter what happens, their backups are always accessible and they don't become another sad story of lost data. Crashplan is our favorite option, being cheap and easy to set up, so get them in the habit now. If you're particularly cheap, RobotTaco notes that you can get a free subscription right now from this page.

    LastPass and Xmarks Premium
    I
f you know someone with multiple computers, the gift of synchronization can be a wonderful thing. Give them a combined subscription to LastPass and Xmarks for their passwords, bookmarks, history, open tabs, and everything else so they're able to browse easily from any computer.?

Xmarks is convenient, but LastPass is the most important app here, as it gives you the enhanced security everyone should have???make sure they create good passwords and turn on two-factor authentication, while you're at it, so they don't fall prey to the ever-increasing number of hacks happening nowadays.?

The pro versions give you access to the mobile apps for each service, more secure two-factor authentication with a thumb drive or YubiKey, plus an ad-free experience and priority support. You can buy each service separately, but buying them both together gets you a pretty sweet discount.

    Pandora One
Everyone loves Pandora, but no one likes ads interrupting their music. Reader jrod3737recommended a subscription to Pandora One as a gift for just about anyone: it not only ditches the ads, but lets you use the Pandora desktop client, customize your experience with skins, and listen to higher quality audio all day long. You can either buy a month-to-month subscription or grab an entire year for a discounted price.

    Evernote Premium
Evernote is still your favorite note-taking application, and it's only gotten better lately. If you know someone that isn't using Evernote yet???particularly if they need some extra organization in their life??a subscription to Evernote Premium is a great way to get them started. A premium subscription gets you more space per month, offline notebooks, collaborative notes, better speed, PDF search, priority support, an ad-free experience, and more. It's the perfect way to take someone's organization from good to awesome with one simple download.

    SUBSCRIPTIONS UNDER $10 A MONTH

    Amazon Prime
Amazon Prime's combination of two-day shipping and sizable library of streaming TV shows and movies makes a fantastic gift for?...?well, anyone who ever uses Amazon. And if they don't use Amazon, they will once they can buy anything with free two-day shipping. Of course, you could always share your two-day shipping benefits with them, but getting them their own subscription lets them stream movies too, which is always nice???especially if they have a home theater PC or streaming set-top box in their living room.

    Netflix and Hulu Plus
For the true TV addict, grab them a subscription to Netflix and/or Hulu Plus so they can watch all their favorite movies and TV shows on demand. Netflix is great for movies and TV shows alike, while Hulu Plus is particularly good for watching current seasons of shows as they air. Both subscriptions let you stream to a set-top box, too, and are the perfect companions for ditching an expensive cable subscription. Grab one or both for your friends and help set them free from the shackles of cable TV.

    Spotify Premium
If your friend has truly embraced streaming and switched to Spotify for their music-listening needs, they need a premium subscription.?

Not only will it get rid of the ads (which the cheaper "Unlimited" subscription will also do), but it gives them higher-quality audio and lets them listen on their iPhone or Android phone, truly completing the Spotify experience.

?It may not be ready to replace most people's libraries, but if you know someone whose fallen in love with it, you should help them go all-out with a Premium subscription.?

Alternatively, if you don't like Spotify, you can grab them a subscription to one of the other great music services out there, like Grooveshark or Rdio.

FOR THE BIG SPENDERS: SUBSCRIPTIONS $10 A MONTH AND UP

A VPN for privacy and international browsing
A VPN (virtual private network)?may seem like an ultra geeky gift, but it's something not everyone knows they need, and nobody wants to pay for. However, it can be useful for all sorts of people, but especially good for users looking for an extra bit of privacy (like bittorrent users) or, as reader JeshuaSanmentions, those living internationally (who?want to watch Hulu or listen to Spotify when it isn't available in their country). Every user is different, so hit the link below to see some of the VPNs we recommend.

    • Choose a VPN (Subscriptions range from $7.99/month to $38/month)

    Extra Dropbox space
Dropbox is one of our all-time favorite Web services, and while you can grab a lot of space for free, sometimes you just need to pony up for a premium subscription. A subscription to expanded space can be great for students, video editors with large files, or people that just want to sync their large musicor photo libraries across computers. Alternatively, you can also grab someone one of the cheaper options, like Google Drive, Skydrive, or Box.

A special thanks goes out to everyone who provided suggestions last week! It made putting together these guides a lot easier, and a better fit for you.

Knight in talks for market-making unit sale: sources

(Reuters) - Knight Capital Group Inc is in talks about possibly selling its market-making operation, its largest and most profitable business, but it is not known if a deal will happen, a source said on Saturday.

The securities firm has been approached by at least two rivals about its market-making operation, which uses complicated computer models to match buy and sell orders in stocks and options, another source familiar with the matter said.

Knight's board of directors is expected to get separate proposals next week for the market-making business from high-speed trading firms Getco LLC and Virtu Financial LLC, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people who were briefed on the discussions. Other potential buyers also could approach the board about that business and perhaps others, it said.

Knight has virtually all of its customers back after a massive August trading glitch and could decide to keep the business, one of the sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Knight said it does not comment on rumors and speculation.

Getco and Virtu spokespeople declined comment on the report.

In October, Knight Capital posted a third-quarter loss of $389.9 million following a massive software glitch.

On August 1, Knight, one of the biggest executors of U.S. stock trades, went live with new software that had been improperly installed. The software conflicted with old code that was to have been deleted, unleashing a flood of orders to the New York Stock Exchange, and leaving Knight with a massive position it had to unload at a loss.

Read of the Day: Baby booming into real estate investing ? 8 Charts ...

The rush into investment real estate has largely been dominated by big pools of money and?foreign investment.? I?m intrigued by seeing the Wall Street machine suddenly finding blue collar rental real estate as an attractive investment.? However there has been another group of potential real estate investors that has largely been hidden from view.? Are baby boomers diving into the real estate investment game?? The prospect of buying investment real estate has never been a popular one.? Most Americans own their own home but that is largely it.? Real estate in the form of investment properties is largely an active venture.? Sure, some can pay a property manager to manage their asset but this will then require a diligent process in selecting a trustworthy team.? The big dive by?Wall Street funds?into residential real estate is interesting because this is not a quick buck industry.? Baby boomers with low yields on fixed income might be looking into buying other real estate as an investment or hedge.? Instead of speculating on this I decided to dig deep on what baby boomers are doing when it comes to other real estate outside of their primary residence.

    Owning other property

One study that I found was conducted by the National Association of Realtors.? We will also compare this data with a more comprehensive survey conducted by the Fed.? The NAR survey contacted 2,000 Americans born between 1946 and 1964 regarding their real estate plans (not exactly a giant pool but we will measure this with other data):

baby boomer real estate investment properties ownership rates

One of the first items that came out was that baby boomers have a much higher home ownership rate than the overall figure.? Baby boomer home ownership is close to 70 percent.? Another item that came out in the survey was that 10 percent were planning on buying real estate in the next 12 months.? This isn?t exactly what some were saying that a large number of boomers were going to?shift the investment market game.? One interesting figure is the satisfaction with current home.? This figure will likely push more homes onto the market as many will sell to move to a more desirable place.

    Baby boomer and ownership rates

So how many baby boomers own other real estate outside of their primary residence?? The survey found that 25 percent of baby boomers that own their primary residence own other real estate:

    baby boomer real estate ownership

The largest segment came from land.? Rental investments are at 8 percent and vacation homes came in at 7 percent.? In other words, this is a small segment of the market.? It is hard to see how baby boomers will suddenly find a desire later in life to dive into the?landlord game.? These figures have been steady over the past decade.? Given the volatility in the housing market will baby boomers be lured back in once again to risk their money at a time when?time?is not on their side?

Comprehensive Fed Survey ? Percent of Families with Other Real Estate

One of the more comprehensive surveys on household financial health comes from the Fed?s Consumer Survey. This survey comes out every three years and has some interesting data.? First, let us see how many families actually own other real estate outside their primary residence:

percent of families with other real estate

This is interesting.? There was a jump from 2001 to 2010 in terms of how many families own real estate outside of their primary residence.? From 1989 to 2000 the figure ranged from 11.5 to 13 percent.? In 2010 it went above 14 percent.? Much of this was pulled in from the mania and easy money but from the more recent survey we examined, it looks like baby boomers in terms of rental real estate didn?t dive in fully.

    Real Estate by Age

The best way to look at this is to pull data on other real estate by head of household:

    real estate holdings by age

From 2000, it does look like baby boomers increased their holding in other real estate yet it doesn?t seem like it was in the form of rental property.? Maybe it came from land and also vacation homes yet that isn?t necessarily an investment more than a luxury purchase.? Short of renting the vacation home out, this is like adding a spa to your home expecting it to yield a net-net return on investment.

Younger Americans, those less than 35 do not have a big holding in other real estate and that is to be expected. ?The pent up flood of baby boomers isn?t likely to be in the form of rental real estate buying but more on them selling their current homes to move up or to move out.

    Investment Property Data ? Value

The one group that seemed to ride out the real estate bubble in a better position is the 55 to 64 age group:

median value of real estate holdings

Every other category saw the median value of their other real estate holdings fall except the 55 to 64 age group.? This could be that this group did not heavily invest during the boom times and probably bought before the?bubble ran up.? Those in the 45 to 54 range saw a dip from over $150,000 to nearly $100,000.? Those less than 35 saw virtually no gain dating back to the early 2000s.? Those claiming that a flood of investors will come from the boomer ranks are simply speculating since the data does not back this up.? The current investment demand is coming from big money and?foreign funds.? The action is also coming from?flippers in boom and bust?markets looking for a quick profit.? I?m not sure if I see boomers rushing in to suddenly become flippers at this stage in their lives.

    Families Owning Stocks

Americans have been hit hard in this real estate bust because most derive their wealth from real estate holdings largely from their primary residence.? Home prices although moving up when looked at the median price, largely distort the current trend.? What is happening is that the mix of distressed properties is falling in terms of the number of sales.? If we look at the Case Shiller home prices are up but maybe not to the levels being reflected in median home prices:

    case shiller

The current standing?? Home prices are still off by 30 percent from the peak and are now up by 4 percent from the trough.? So households have a long way to go when it comes to repairing the damage from the bust.? Yet the stock market is now getting close to the previous peak.? Why are households not benefitting from this?
    families with stocks
I?ve discussed this before and US households do not hold stocks in large numbers.? Those that do, may hold them through pensions (a dwindling segment) and it is nothing in comparison to the amount held in residential real estate.? That is why the recent stock market recovery has done very little for US households.? Only about 15 percent of Americans have direct investments with stocks (off from 21 percent in 2001).

    Household Income

    median income

Yet the most important figure to look at is?household income.? This is important whether we are looking at California housing or nationwide housing.? Household income adjusted for inflation is back to levels last seen in the 1990s.? So with less discretionary funds, will more baby boomers dive into investment real estate especially seeing how volatile real estate can be?? I?m sure many realize that rental property is largely an active investment.? Do boomers have the desire to take on this new avenue of investing?? It doesn?t seem like this is happening in large numbers.? One thing that can change the market dynamics is if boomers begin selling their homes to move out and transition.? This will likely add more inventory to the market and is a more likely scenario that lies ahead.

From the overall data it doesn?t seem like boomers are going full force into the investment property market.? Even if they enter in today, they are?competing with big pocket Wall Street?and foreign money that is willing to over pay.? With 10,000 hitting retirement age per day, this is a segment we need to keep our eyes on.

(AP) ? A Dallas trucker imprisoned for seven months in Mexico on accusations that he tried to smuggle assault rifle ammunition into the country broke down in tears Friday when he returned to the U.S., saying he had at times given up hope.

Jabin Bogan maintains he was on his way to Phoenix to deliver the ammunition in April when he took a wrong highway exit and accidentally crossed the border into Mexico. Despite his insistence it was an honest mistake, the 27-year-old was arrested and taken to a Mexican maximum security prison.

"Some days I gave up hope. Some days I felt like God was, to be honest in my heart, like God was laughing. Like he was just punishing me for no reason. I felt like just giving up," he said during a brief news conference in El Paso shortly after arriving back in the U.S.

Bogan tearfully thanked his supporters, and said that at times he felt like taking his own life or someone else's.

"I was the only black American person in the whole prison. God brought me through and I made it," he said.

Bogan was released from the Mexican prison last week but had been detained by immigration authorities until Friday. He was found guilty of possession of military ammunition and sentenced to three years, but the ruling was later commuted for time served and a fine.

He was arrested on April 17 in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, just across the border from El Paso. Bogan said he was headed to Phoenix when he got lost, and he told Mexican authorities that a law enforcement officer at the border had told him to continue driving across the international bridge.

Bogan said he attempted to turn back when he realized he had crossed into Mexico, but the layout of the traffic lanes prevented him from returning without first crossing into the truck inspection area in Juarez, where his truck was searched.

He said Friday that when he acknowledged to the agents he had ammunition, "they said, 'in this side of the country it's illegal to have bullets.' And that's when everything went upside down they took me in and never let me out."

During his trial, Mexican customs agents contradicted prosecutors' claim that Bogan had 268,000 bullets hidden under the floorboards of his 18-wheeler's trailer when he was arrested. Agents testified in June that Bogan was trying to make a U-turn back into the U.S. when they found the ammunition bundled on top of wooden pallets inside the trailer.

Bogan was arrested less than 100 feet from a giant billboard that reads, "no more weapons." The sign, unveiled by Mexican President Felipe Calderon two months before Bogan was caught, was made out of seized high-caliber rifles and ammunition.

Calderon has blamed lax U.S. gun laws for the flow of weapons into Mexico.

An appeal filed in August by Bogan's lawyer in Mexico, Emilio de la Rosa, reduced the charge from smuggling to possession of military ammunition. That allowed Bogan to be released after serving a portion of his sentence and paying a fine. He also was sentenced to supervised release, which he can do by mail.

The ammunition belonged to United Nations Ammunition. De la Rosa said the bullets would not be returned to the company.

A spokesman with the Mexican Attorney General did not immediately respond to a request seeking comment.

Bogan's attorney, Carlos Spector, maintains that Bogan made an honest mistake. But he said his lawyers decided not to fight the case, in part because of the potential political implications.

"He (De la Rosa) knew the options were get him out in six or seven months or sink him with a 30-year-sentence. Asking for a not-guilty sentence was impossible because the Mexican government had to get something out of this," Spector said.
